studiously（藤本）

studious「勤勉な」からの類推では意味が取れなさそうだ。studiouslyを引くとGeniusでは「慎重に、注意して」くらいの訳語が与えられていたが、この訳語を当ててもよくわからない。英英を引く。

studiously: in a way that is carefully planned and deliberate [OAED10]; If you do something studiously, you do it carefully and deliberately [COBUILD]

be deliberately vague about X「Xについて意図的に明言を避ける」という表現があるので、そのことだろうと当たりをつける。まずは物書堂で用例の串刺し検索。

studious avoidance of gender-specific pronouns [Merriam Webster]

上記の用例を見ると、表現としてはavoidとともに用いることが多いようだ。avoidには、{deliberately, carefully, intentionally, purposely} avoid「意識的に避ける」という使い方があるが、やはりこれに似ている。studiouslyも、できれば話題にしたくない事柄や疾しさのある話題を意識的に(deliberately)かわそうとするときに使われるのだろう。

He was looking studiously down to avoid meeting her eyes. [OALD 10]

これも要はavoid eye contact（視線を合わせない）ということだから、やはり状況が上記のようなものとして想定できる。

They studiously avoided/ignored each other. [CD Online]

She sat at her desk and studiously ignored me. [OALD 10]

ignoreとの使用も多いようだ。ignoreもdeliberately ignoreという言い方はするので、やはり似ている。

She was studiously vague about where she was going. [CD Online]

今回のEconomistの表現も辞書の用例にあった。もうだいぶ分かってきた。
