【英検準1級・1級単語】prodigious（藤本）

by Xは過去完了や過去進行形と使われることはよくあります。「Xの頃までにはすでに...していた」ということ。look up X { online, on the internet }「インターネットで調べる」。learned that SVは「SVという知識を獲得する（＝SVだと知る）」ということ。sodium hydroxideは「水酸化ナトリウム」。togetherはif they are mixed togetherということ。

prodigiousは英検ハイレベル級にあたる単語になると思います。「数や量がとても大きい、莫大な」という意味で、a prodigious amount of X / prodigious amounts of Xで覚えておくと良いです。また、量が多いことを表す際、huge amounts of Xやlarge amounts of Xなど、amountが複数形になることが多いことも知っておきましょう。

a prodigious memory「並外れた記憶力」、a prodigious talent「驚くべき才能」も覚えましょう。

以下はCambridge Online Dictionaryの用例から。太字部分をそのまま覚えれば表現力が上がると思います。

The bakhshi is renowned for his prodigious memory.「驚異的な記憶力で知られている」

Gifted with prodigious memory, he can simplify the most complex case for the dullest of jurors.「並外れた記憶力に恵まれる」

He proved to be an exceptional student with a prodigious memory and an uncanny ability to see things not just as they were but as they could be.「並外れた記憶力をもったすぐれた学生」（an uncanny ability「説明のつかない不思議な能力」も大切。）
